Not far from where Michelangelo is buried lies the “CASA BUONARROTI”, the House of the Buonarroti family. This house is now a museum celebrating the most illustrious member of the family, Michelangelo Buonarroti.
Michelangelo never lived in the house as it looks today, but just a few years after he had made “David”, he bought several small properties here.
His plan was for them to be transformed into a beautiful house worthy of the Buonarroti family, who was of minor noble origins.
He actually lived in one of these smaller properties for about nine years, the years when he worked for the Medicis in the San Lorenzo church.
His dream of having the smaller properties transformed into one big and “honorable house in the city” was never accomplished while he was alive, but his nephew and other family members fulfilled his dream after his death.
This museum is a must-see in Florence, not only for its fantastic history, but also because it houses the very first works Michelangelo made in marble at ages 15 and 16 for Lorenzo the Magnificent of the Medici family. These two works are significant for his later works and lifelong interests.
On the tour we will also explore the neighbourhood around the house, the Santa Croce area, and we will finish by visiting the Santa Croce Church to see the tomb of Michelangelo.
The tour will take 3 hours.
