Michelangelo’s family, the Buonarroti’s, originate from the Santa Croce area of Florence.
Michelangelo’s father was a Magistrate of Florence, and was sent to Caprese, a small village roughly 100 kilometres (62mi) east of Florence to act as the High Magistrate of Caprese and Chuiusi for 6 months.
During this period, Michelangelo was born, but soon the family returned to Florence.
In 1913 the name of the village was changed from Caprese to Caprese Michelangelo to honour its most famous citizen, even if he had only lived there for some months.
This tour will take you into the Santa Croce neighbourhood in Florence, where we will follow in the footsteps of Michelangelo. We will walk down the street where he lived as a child, we will visit the house where he planned to live in his old age, and we will visit the church where he is buried.
The tour takes 3 hours.
